Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Booh, Tarn Taran conducted an awareness programme on crop residue management at Sri Guru Arjan Dev Government College in Tarn Taran. About 150 students of Science and Art streams participated in the event. Speaking on the occasion, Dr Balwinder Kumar, Associate Director (T) welcomed all the students and teachers and thanked Principal Dr. H.S. Bhalla for providing opportunity to interact with young minds. Dr. Kumar said that after harvesting of paddy, burning of straw causes environmental pollution besides affecting soil properties negatively. The soil fertility level also get reduced due to the burning of organic matter that affects overall crop productivity badly. The government has infused various schemes for the farmers for the management of crop residue by providing subsidies on the implements. Dr. Kumar further elaborated that purpose of organizing such programme among college students is to ignite their minds for the protection of the environment by stopping burning of crop residues, besides they can also educate their families for shunning the practice of burning of residue and to use it alternatively for the production of mushrooms, paper making, livestock feeding and for generation of electricity etc. Also paddy straw can be managed In-situ with the help of machinery such as happy seeder, super seeder, MB plough, and rotavator etc. Students were also apprised about various activities taken by university and KVK. Principal of the college thanked KVK team for organizing activities related to crop residue management and climate change in their college. All the teaching faculty of the college actively participated in this programme. During the event students participated in different activities such as poster making, essay writing and speech competition and presented their views on air and water pollution, climate change and other related aspects. The students with best performance of various competitions were honored by KVK, Booh and college management.
